Even the Daily Mail thinks GTA is a 'creative achievement'
Excuse me while I check Google News for reports of any skeletal horsemen, trumpet playing angels, dogs and cats living together, etc.
Nope. Nothing out of the ordinary. Which makes it all the more bizarre that the Daily Mail has gone and given GTA IV a good review.
Not just good, either,. FIVE STAR GOOD. That's a lot of stars for a murder simulator.
The review starts out in typical style - barely a paragraph has passed before the litany of offensive content (prostitution, drug dealing, etc. etc.) is rolled out and this is followed by a guilt-by-association remark about the recent stabbing in a GTA launch queue.
Then things take a turn for the surreal. The reviewer thinks the game is "a phenomenal technological and creative achievement" and that "Stunts are better than ever, but the driving itself is a revelation." He then goes on to praise the unique handling of different vehicles.
Funnily enough, that may be the first time I have seen a mainstream review of GTA refer to what it feels like to play the damn thing, as opposed to how merely thinking about the game can cause a child to murder a prostitute.
This is good news indeed, because if GTA is impressing people enough to see past the hype and look at the game underneath then we may finally have turned some kind of corner.
