No Portal sequel this year

TOBOXpcSCRNportlChmbA060003.jpgUnsurprisingly, it doesn't look like we're going to get a sequel to Portal this year. Speaking to Eurogamer, Valve's Doug Lombardi cited the desire to create a revolutionary sequel as the reason. "You won't see a new Portal at retail this Christmas because of that. That's the trade off. People want more, but we don't want to give them more of the same right away because that would just be boring," he said. He's right.

It would be so, sooo tempting to stick a whole load of downloadable maps onto Xbox Live and charge people for playing through extra levels. Just look at what Valve did with the original Half Life- Opposing Force was a good laugh, Blue Shift a step too far. But it's good to see them make a stand and try to do something different. Portal was perfect as it was, the maps explored pretty much every concept that the gameplay promised. You just don't need more maps for it. You need a whole new premise. I'm glad that Valve is giving it time, but I'm still hoping that it's not going to turn into another TF2 style wait.

Although TF2 is genius.
