GTA Day One Sales: Xbox 360 > PS3
Wow. We weren't sure what to expect - especially considering the recent success of the PS3 in Europe of late - but it seems the 360 version of GTA had the clear edge in first-day sales.
Naturally, the game smashed all kinds of records, ending up with a total of 609,000 copies sold, easily beating the previous record holder - and last home console GTA, San Andreas, which sold just over half a million in its first 24 hours in 2004.
335,000 of those sales were on Microsoft's console, which makes it *gets calculator* 274,000 for the PS3 version. A 61,000 difference on day one. Those TV ads must have made the difference. As a fairly gaming-oblivious man said to me in the midnight queue for the game at Tesco's the other day "I thought it were Xbox exclusive". Mind you, he also insisted Saint's Row was a Rockstar game.
The times, they are a-changin', as Bob Dylan once sang. Formerly the domain of GTA, PlayStation - as these figures prove - is no longer uniquely synonymous with the brand.
Go go fanboy arguments!

Percentage wise its 55% to 45% which isn't too bad a performance for the PS3 considering theres 1.2M PS3s and 2.2M 360s. So the attatchment rate is higher for the PS3 version.

I am going to argue that the attachment rate is higher on the PS3 cause what else do they have to buy? The real GT4 is not out yet, nor is SW:Force Unleashed.

You mean GT5, I think 4 has been available for a while right? I'll be passing on GTA, just not my kind of game.

I wouldn't say this was good news for Microsoft, beating the ps3 in first day sales by just 10%, despite having roughly double the consoles out there. That would suggest the tv adverts were a waste of money surely?

The reason it's a big deal is that traditionally GTA = PlayStation. The fact that not only has Microsoft stolen a large share of the sales, but the lion's share is quite significant.
Having said all that, I'd imagine that it's sold a number of consoles for Sony - a lot of people will have gone for the bundle, evidenced by the fact that I saw three people carrying it in the town centre.
The full week's sales will be interesting.

/me wonders if these are jsut North American sales figures.
Yet another article of sales that ignore the rest of the world. But hey, its best to fanboi around in the only territory that you're winning in.

I don't have a 360, but I think it's a good system.
I really don't understand the "no games comment" that always comes up when some people try to down the PS3. There are games.
What to buy?
Uncharted, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Ratchet, Motorstorm, and the other games that are shared between the systems.
There are games for the PS3... come on... You do know that right?

Are there just north american sales figures or worldwide?
Some perspective would be nice.

Sorry Jack, not buying that.
By rights, 360 owners should have been all over this. When was the last 'must have' game released for the 360, or more to the point, when's the next one coming along?
A better argument would surely be that the game pretty much sold out at launch, so a lot of 360 owners who may have wanted to pick up a copy couldn't. Fewer PS3 owners = more to go around = higher attach rate.
I must say that this is article is actually bordering on balanced compared to many on this site - hence the lack of the usual backlash from PS3 owners such as myself.
Enjoy the game, guys...

gta origanily was a sony game and then it became multi-platform so there are more gta fanboys on sony side but the dlc has bribed them. being sceptic about this dlc. rumors have it that itll cost $$ and its its not that much. anyway the ps3 version is better grafficly and because of inittal install load times are much faster.to anyone who has not made their mind up i vote yes to PS3.

To clarify: this is a UK-based site, and these are opening day figures for the UK, according to Chart-Track. The link should clear that up.
Part of the reason I posted this was that I was honestly quite surprised by the result. Sony has been on a roll of late in the UK and Europe and so an MS win wasn't necessarily a given.
Like I say, traditionally, GTA has always meant PlayStation. Now there's a number of gamers who'll associate it with the Xbox brand.
US sales will be VERY interesting, but they won't be revealed for some time yet.

have you heard about the freezing issues on the PS3 version, rumor or not thats the kind of thing that make differences on the sales numbers, and what about the DLC offrede by microsoft, consistent online service and achievements I can see a clear winner.

It looks like this might be EPOS sales only according to the link and may not include preorders. The 'Head of Games' for ASDA stores said in an interview with MCV last week that there were 3 times more preorders for the PS3 version than the 360 version. That's a huge amount.
ChartTrack/ELSPA normally release proper figures for the previous week every Tuesday. I think I will wait until then for the complete numbers.

Xbox 360 sales figures would be much higher if it werent for the leaked version prior to launch and the piracy that is possible on the 360 but not PS3 (yet). Even so, 360 still has the highest game attach rate per console, says something about the quality and range of games on the console.

Played it for 11 hours straight yday, only 22% complete! I have a launch 60gb ps3 and have had no problems at all. I was online with my friends with no connection issues or frame rate problems, it was awesome! And also im running my ps3 on a 40" 1080p W series Bravia and GTA 4 looks so good that i don't understand what all the fuss is about. The depth of field and lighting effects leave me speechless at times! Ps3 and 360 owners really should put their differences aside on this game and just enjoy it.

Yeah not too bad...... except this website is LYING!! AGAIN!! Luckily I was all over the south of England and ALL PS3 versions were sold out, with plenty of 360s in stock. My store even called me up to let me know they were sold out!! And amazon.co.uk were sold out as well.
