Why a BioShock MMO could be fantastic
A BioShock film and MMO is a possiblity, according to a recent Take Two slide presentation given at the Bank of America Smid cap conference. The presentation, meant to justify the reasons behind Take Two's refusal of EA's offer, listed both a BioShock game and film as "Potential Untapped Opportunities."
Here's the thing- I think that a BioShock online game could be really, really good. The MMO genre's a bit stagnant at the moment, owned by grind-heavy dungeon crawlers for the most part, with cross-genre attempts like Tabula Rasa failing to find a similar degree of commercial success. The action and light RPG mechanics could work nicely online, enticing in new players unmoved by the typical, highly tactical, by-the-numbers combat of most RPGs, with the levelling mechanics enough to give the title longevity. The BioShock universe is already well established, adding a lure to gamers not already hooked on MMOs. It could be the shot in the arm that the genre needs to get properly established on consoles.
MMOs haven't really taken off on the Xbox 360, but there can be little doubt that the subscription method's being eyed up hungrily for Microsoft. There's a lot of potential for a really good MMO. Not only are console hard drives fast becoming the norm, but more people are subscribing to online console services like the PSN and Xbox Live than in the last generation. The user base is finally there, but the traditional MMORPG simply isn't going to cut it for consoles, even for die-hard MMO buffs, given that MMO games are almost exclusively designed for a mouse and keyboard setup. Again, a BioShock MMO could get around that by employing a more FPS style of gameplay.
Not to mention that BioShock's got one of the richest backstories of recent times. I think it could work. Still not convinced that a film would necessarily work- most of BioShock worked because of its atmosphere rather than plot specifics- but an MMO could really make sense here.
