Aliens: Colonial Marines details come to light, some good, some baaaad

logo.jpgThe one squad shooter that we're sort of excited about, Aliens, had a few features revealed today. First the good stuff: the game will feature sequences called "Make a Stand." If you've seen Aliens, you'll know what to expect, as you're tasked with sealing doors shut, setting up sentry guns and putting down bomb traps. It'll also feature four-player drop-in co-op via splitscreen, Live or System Link. But now the bad news: it features quick time events.

...

OK, so it'll apparently just tinge the edges of your screen rather than flashing up buttons in the middle of your HUD. But what's this obessions that so many cinematic games have with QTEs? They're just not fun. While they might do a great job showing off amazing cutscenes, they reduce the gameplay to nothing more than a trial and error memorisation chore that takes you out of the game for five minutes. There are so many better ways of getting cinematic moments across in FPS games. Charming in Shenmue, but that was almost eight years ago. It's time to move on.

QTE's are basically a way of spicing up cut scenes and I doubt it'll happpen every five minutes.
A quick time event in four player co-op could be frustating. 'Press it now! Oh no you've missed it again. No I didn't it's your fault! Oh well. let's reload.'
Seriously though, this could be great if it's the BIA Gearbox that's making it, not the team that made Nightfire.
