New open-world title This is Vegas announced

TIV_Box.jpgOpen-world title This is Vegas has just been announced by Midway and will apparently allow players to " fighting, gambling, driving and partying their way through the most decadent, fast-paced and wildest city in the world." Sounding suspiciously similar to another crime-based open-world game, it'll give you the chance to build a criminal empire, gamble and race in the city of sin. It's due for Xbox 360, PC and PS3 some time in Winter of 2008. You can see more at the website, here.

We've seen a lot of GTA-esque titles over the years. Some games, like Saints Row, unashamedly borrowed from the GTA formula but ended up with something that was surprisingly playable. Other games experimented a little more, such as Crackdown which threw in super powers and a comicbook sensibility. Others- such as the abominable True Crime series- just seemed to miss the point. There aren't enough details to judge yet, but This is Vegas sounds like it could be taking a little inspiration from the GTA series. Let's just hope they put some care into the design- it's sooo easy for sandbox games to get mindlessly repetitive at breathtaking speed.

It is a great year for sandbox-games. GTA IV and This is Vegas are my favourites for this year.
