Stranglehold adverts banned, so sales will probably rise

stranglehold.jpgWhile the game came out on 360 last year, Midway have just produced an advert for their 18-rated John Woo branded adventure Stranglehold, and the Advertising Standards Agency have promptly banned it. According to CVG, the ASA objected to the Stranglehold TV advertisment on grounds that it breached rules concerning violence, cruelty, health and safety.

The watchdog explained "We considered the ad was likely to be seen as encouraging and condoning violence", ruling the trailer must not be broadcast again in it's current form.

It would seem then that the only option for publisher Midway would be to tone down the advert, or use its banning to generate some Manhunt 2 style hype. Perhaps a letter to the Daily Mail might be a good starting point. In the same week that PM Gordon Brown expressed concerns about games encouraging knife crime in youths, this setback for Stranglehold is the latest in increasingly tough times for developers of adult games.
