XBLA's Wednesday release, Undertow, has promise...

03_Undertow_IronMarine.jpgIt's easy to get rather jaded about XBLA releases. Some genuine classic gems, some OK-ish new stuff, and a whole lot of incredibly forgettable casual games. Tomorrow's release, however, hasn't got us as cynical as we usually are, with the Unreal 3 powered Undertow due to make an appearance. An undersea side-scrolling shooter, it'll apparently let up to sixteen players battle it out in multiplayer, as well as feature a single-player campaign which you can play through on co-op. It's up from tomorrow for a reasonable 800 Microsoft points.

It's good to see more original content like this. Retro releases aren't necessarily a bad thing, especially when classics like Streets of Rage II are available for download. It's just that we're not seeing an equivalent number of decent, original, games out there. It'd be good to see more games that buck the trend, games with distinctive graphical looks and original gameplay. Let's just hope that Undertow is one of them.
