Halo 3's 'Heroic' map pack arriving on December 11 - and more maps confirmed for 2008

That was today's exciting announcement from Bungie, then.

The three-map expansion pack for Halo 3, now officially named the Heroic Map Pack, will arrive for download on December 11. And it's not free. Halo 3 fans will be expected - no, REQUIRED - to hand over 800 points for the privilege of playing on three new maps called Standoff, Rat's Nest and Foundry, the last of which is an editable Forge map, set in a vast warehouse where everything can be fiddled with and shifted around by players.

Here's what one of them looks like, for the benefit of people who can only digest facts if they are accompanied by colourful pictures:

And if you don't think three maps are worth 800 points you can always just wait - Microsoft's taken the unusual step of saying these three maps can be had for free in "spring 2008," when the next wave of paid-for maps will arrive.
