Bungie "tore all of the walls out" of Microsoft's game HQ

bungie-logo.jpgAnd you know why? Because they're REBELS! See that rulebook? Not even touched, let alone read.

Exceptionally dry development community blog Develop recently interviewed Bungie's Marty O'Donnell and Harold Ryan, in which they covered the entire Microsoft era storyline - from the buy to the recent break-up.

When Microsoft bought Bungie back in 2000, the team moved from its Chicago base to Microsoft's corporate HQ in Redmond - but MAVERICK Bungie was not going to play by The Man's (Microsoft's) rules! Studio manager Harold Ryan even compared Bungie to evil Star Trek automatons The Borg by using the word "assimilate!"

Ryan said of the initial MS buyout "One of the first things they tried after acquiring Bungie, after first attempting to fully assimilate them, was to move Bungie into a standard Microsoft building with the rest of the game group. But unlike the rest of the teams they’d brought in previously, Bungie didn’t move into Microsoft corporate offices – we tore all of the walls out of that section of the building and sat in a big open environment."

The interview then concludes with lots of vague bluffing over future formats for Bungie projects, with O'Donnell pointing out that Bungie "could" switch to a different console partner, but is rather unlikely to as they all totally dig working with MS.

Basically, the newly independent Bungie's being a bit ballsy and is no doubt trying to get a bit more cash out of Microsoft to avoid future "BUNGIE ON PS3" headlines of shame.
