Bioware's dialogue tech might appear in other games. The beginning of a dangerous trend?

salarian.jpgThat really cool looking conversation system that’ll be appearing in Mass Effect could be appearing in other games, now that BioWare’s been acquired by EA. Speaking to Business Week, President of EA’s Games label Frank Gibeau stated that use of BioWare's technology was a major benefit of purchasing the studio. "The dialogue engine is something we will almost immediately look at as an asset for other teams." Apparently, he sees all the EA studios developing and sharing technology between themselves.

While I think the conversation system looks revolutionary, and promises to elevate video game speech above the usual talking heads approach, I’ve got reservations about it appearing in other games. This generation of games has been the most expensive to develop so far. Publishers are keen to cut costs wherever they can, for instance by re-using game engines. But for something as specific as a dialogue system, the result could be a stifling of innovation as new studios are unkeen to spend the development time to make their own systems.
