Stick this very much in the rumour category for now, but game news website primotechnology.com is claiming that a “source close to BioWare confirmed” that the upcoming BioWare MMORPG is indeed set in the Knights of the Old Republic universe. Even without the rumour, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that the MMORPG is indeed based on KOTOR, given the massive fan following that the series has garnered, as well as the slightly open end of part two.

I think my favourite aspect of the KOTOR universe was the plot and characterisation. The second title, despite a rather fractured narrative at times, featured a morality that went beyond the typical good/evil that we see in most video games. While I could see the potential in an MMORPG for some interesting morality mechanics, I’m just worried it’ll descend into the usual grind, with the plot taking a backseat. Most MMORPGs demand a consistent universe- introducing change is difficult. Will KOTOR’s celebrated plotlines survive the shift into the online sphere? Still, speculation will be more fruitful once BioWare reveal, umm, anything about the upcoming title.
