Top mod: The Duke turns wireless

I can’t really imagine why you’d actually want one of these – unless you just have gargantuan mitts capable of crushing cement bricks without breaking a sweat. That doesn’t mean it’s not one very clever mod though. Console modder, Ben Heck, has applied his skills to filling up the giant original Xbox controller (apparently known as ‘The Duke’) with all the sweet high-tech goodies found in the far superior Xbox 360 wireless controller.

Packing all the components in probably wasn’t much of a problem given the amount of space there is to work with. However, Heck has also managed to get both the Guide and sync buttons in and include the headphone jack slot too. Apart from these additions and the blissful lack of cabling, you would be hard pushed to see any difference between it and an original.

Bidding is now open on the site in case you have a hand-span wide enough to render the current wireless controllers useless in your giant fists. Even the mod creator wouldn’t let his masterpiece go without a couple of parting shots, stating: “It’s not often you get to work on a controller so large it’s classified by NASA as a low-level Earth-orbit object. For this reason, during the modding, I was careful not to drop it as this would have created an impact crater sufficient to snuff out all life on Earth and the dinosaurs, whichever comes first. Aerosmith and Bruce Willis were standing by to save the day in case of mishaps.”

Update: As eagle-eyed reader Cayno pointed out, The Duke is not the same as the Controller S, which although still being a bit of a behemoth, was actually scaled down from the size of the original. Here's praying I never have a late night alleyway encounter with the man who can actually fit one of these in their paws.

That isn't the Controller S. The Controller S was a smaller version of the original Xbox controller (pictured next to the Elite controller above)...and yes, i'm very bored at work!

Wow - well spotted. Guess that puts the size of The Duke into perspective! Now I'm faced with the complicated task of correcting the article. And the title too. Doh.
