Sony "underestimated" challenges of Home online service- Microsoft's Neil Thompson

home2.jpgSpeaking to gamesindustry.biz, Microsoft UK senior regional director at Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, Neil Thompson, stated that he thought that Sony had underestimated the challenges of providing an online service with Home. “But I think one of the disappointing/interesting things I heard from them at the Tokyo Game Show was that they just delayed the [Home] online service delivery again,” he said. “That's more interesting, because I think they underestimated how challenging it is to deliver this sort of service, and to deliver the elements of the service that consumers really want."

"It would be good to see the reality versus what they had on the blueprints - what they wanted to deliver against what they can actually deliver, because I know they generated a lot of interest based on what they said last year."

I think the PSN has a lot of things going for it, but I’m still not entirely sure that Home is one of them. To me personally, the idea of a console social space where I can play and talk about games just doesn’t appeal. If I wanted to play, say, a casual game quickly, I’d just want to jump right into it. If I wanted to discuss games, I’d use the net, without having to load up a virtual world and avatar. Still, the User Generated Content stuff could work out well-I don't think that Microsoft has embraced the UGC as much as Sony and it’s one area where the PSN has the potential to outdo Xbox Live. Either way, it’ll be a fascinating experiment to watch.
