Xbox Live causing UTIII delay?

UT2k7_Image03.jpgXbox Live is causing problems for Unreal Tournament III’s planned console mod system, it’s recently been revealed. While mod functionality has been confirmed for the PS3 version of the game, Epic VP Mark Rein has stated that he hopes “to find a way to bring mods over to the Xbox 360.”

"That's part of the reason we announced we were shipping the game on PC and PS3 this Fall, but we don't have a date for the Xbox 360 version - it'll be some time after the new year. Part of that is because we haven't been able to figure out just how we're going to do the mods. And Microsoft's got a very busy Christmas schedule... We just couldn't get enough attention from them to solve that problem”

"Worst case scenario is, we port them and we put them through certification and we put them up as downloadable content” he said, adding that "That's the worse case scenario. Hopefully between now and whenever it is we ship on Xbox 360, we figure out a user-managed way to do it."

Needless to say, t’s unlikely to be welcome news to Xbox 360 toting UTIII fans. Still, I think that Epic’s made the right choice in waiting to get the mods working properly. Potentially, it can bring so much longevity to a title: just look at CS for Half-Life. Still, I hope that the mods don't have to go through certification. Apart from the time delay in getting mods up on the network, the certification system's probably going to cause a good few copyright issues when the time comes.
