Sony and Microsoft will match Wii sales in 2008
That's according to another one of those attention-seeking analysts, who, speaking to fact-based world-events blog Bloomberg, said that Xbox 360 and PS3 price cuts and non-Wii games like Rock Band would leave all three next-gen console on a "level playing field" in 2008.
Analyst Pelham Smithers has given Nintendo shares a "sell" rating on the back of this, reckoning that the wavy Gamecube has already peaked. Oh, but it'll still top the charts this Christmas.
"This Christmas, Wii will win, but not to the same extent they've been winning. Next year, the playing field will level even more," said Smithers, who's no doubt already a bit bored of Zelda and is wishing Nintendo would bloody hurry up with the Mario games.
With Halo 3, Gotham 4, the shockwaves of Bioshock still reverberating around the world and more Triple-A games on the way, it's clearly going to be Xbox 360 that'll benefit most from Wii's fading novelty.

If Wii is the only console left, it's GAME OVER for the entire games industry too when the novelty of endless shite mini games wears off.

Think about it, Wii has become the #1 back when most third party Wii games were mediocre and before any of Nintendo's top franchises hit the Wii. Just think of what the demand will be like once better third party games hit the shelves this fall and once the big franchises like Metroid, Mario, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, and Pokemon have been released. Not to mention the demand that Wii Fit will generate. The Wii is just starting and if M$ is hedging their bets on Halo 3, Rock Band and Bioshock, well they will have a rude awakening when they see nintendo pull away over the next year.

Wii is getting Rock Band. Wonder where these people get their facts...

XBOX 360 and PS3 are fighting for the same market, in fact - save for a handful of exclusives - they have the same games. Wii games, whether good or bad, are much more often originals. With 3rd parties soon to be catering to all 3 consoles, Nintendo with the lowest price and Nintendo having the best game developer in-house, it's got this generation's console war in the bag.

Sorry XBOX360 & PS3, the game is OVER !!! to laaaaaate!

This analyst is an idiot....
Nintendo iss moving 400K+ WII units a month and still selling out its inventory EVERY month nearly a year after release, while the 360 has dropped to sub 200k and falling since they no longer were the only console out there.
The 360 had a high attach rate, but its sales have stalled. With a 30% failure rate on the 360, and lesser graphics than the PS3, its wedged between the WII on the low end, and the PS3 on the high end. 360's only play is price point and that's not enough to move units.
End of the Day 360 is another net loss to MS's bottom line adding to the over 21 BILLION in losses they have suffered on the XBOX project to date... with a total worldwide movement of ~25 Million tops, and 3rd place.
Wii casts a much broader net, as such it will sell more units than any competitor.. the idea that it will fade is comical. Nintendo doesn't need to sell to a high percentage of its target market, because its market is gigantic compared to the more limited market appeal of the PS3 and 360.
While I agree Nintendo has had a great stock run up that won't last forever, as stocks are about greed and fear, and rarely have anything to do with fundamental business decisions, and there is nothing wrong with profit taking on a stock that's enjoyed a nearly 70% run up. But to claim that 360 and PS3 will be beneficiaries in the coming year is comical. Wii has this generation won, hands down, no other console will remotely come close to the number of installed units Nintendo is going to move.

The XBOX 360 will preform well this christmas. I don't see it hitting numbers like the Wii though. I don't see why people think the Wii is a novalty. Gaming should evole in other ways than graphics. People desire true virual reality in gaming. The Wii's controls bring that feeling closer to them. I do know Halo 3 will be huge. I know many people that buy consoles for the Halo franchise. Ps. Bioshock is a pretty game but way too short!

Sure Rocka, ever care to try Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii? Sure is a "shity minigame". LOL Then tell me something budy, how is that Wii games like MP3 are getting an overall rating of 9.5 out of 10 across the web meanwhile flagship PS3 titles like Heavenly Sword and Lair are getting an average 7 to 7.5 out of 10? LOL sure you moronic "hardcore" guys are going to masturbate on 1080p graphics this holidays, convinced that you are playing a next gen game but in reality is the same crap we have been playing for more than 20 years this time only with better graphics in 1080p. Whats next budy? come on, tell me? The PS4? with a 12 cores cell CPU using the same PS1 controllers and same freaking PS1 gameplay? Ha ha ha ha Such a morons...

Yo mamma was a novelty!
Seriously, the Wii has the most awesome exclusive games ever. Super Paper Mario, Zelda, Metroid Prime 3...the year has gone by so fast that I can't believe it's almost been out for an entire year already!
Posted by: Wiggy | August 31, 2007 1:32 AM
The wii is the only games console I know that takes a step backwards, and launches a new console in 2006, with a 2001, XBOX 1 technology.
With over 48% of new TV sales in the US already HDTV, and the non hi-def Wii chockfull of crap minigames and kiddie games and no HDTV, the Wii is going to look dated by next year, and ius going toend up losing this war.
For months, the Nintendo zombies kept screaming that Metroid was going to take out Halo 3 in sales. As it tuns out, Bioshock alone is busy clobbering Metroid Prime in sales in the US as we speak, and while Metroid is a last-gen Gamecube game, Bioshock is about the best rated game for the past 5 years, and shows what true next-gen gaming is about.
We haven't even had Halo 3 yet.
From August, the 360 will have the top selling games every single month till the end of the year(the 360 already had the best seling game in July), and starting September, the 360 will outsell the Wii.

Wiggy : "Seriously, the Wii has the most awesome exclusive games ever. Super Paper Mario, Zelda, Metroid Prime 3.."
Oh rubbish!
"Wii has the most awesome exclusive games ever."?
Don't make m laugh!
Nothing touches the 360 in superb exclusivs this year.
The 360 has the superb, true next-gen, totally awesome Bioshock(which curently has the best rating if any game in the last 5 years and is number # 1 all over the world), Mass Effect , and the super Halo 3. Those 3 games alone blow everything on the wii out of the water.
No to mention Assasin's Creed, Rock Band etc, which will appear on the 360/PS3 but not the Wii.

Drinking Kool Aide from vgchartz again are you?
When did vgcahrtz ever give out accurate figures bot games/console sales? Every sngle month, vgchartz console sales figures have been way off the accurate NPD figures.
The 360 had sold 10.4 million units as December LAST year. Since then, the 360 has sold over 1.4 million units in America alone(NPD). It's impossible for the 360 to have sold just 10.6 million ltd like vgchartz keeps claiming., especially since all the 360 Pro's being sold at Amazon for example, are all currently HDMI 360 Pros that were only manufactured in June, after Microsoft had announced 11.6 million 360's sold in Microsoft's June earnings statement for the end of June.
The 360 still rules.

"The XBOX 360 will preform well this christmas. I don't see it hitting numbers like the Wii though. "
The 360 wil rule this Christmas. It's got too many really geat games for Christmas. The wii doesn't even come close in AAA titles.
"I don't see why people think the Wii is a novalty. Gaming should evole in other ways than graphics."
It's not just graphice. It's AI, physics, gameplay, atmosphere etc, all of which the Wii is last-gen at.
"People desire true virual reality in gaming. The Wii's controls bring that feeling closer to them."
The Wii's AI, Graphics, physics etc don't even come close to virtual reality. They are old hat.
" Bioshock is a pretty game but way too short!"
Bioshock is not just pretty, its the best game by far this year, and the highest rated game in the last 5 years. Nothing on the wii even comes close.

48% of households on HDTV? haha, yea right. You are grossly uninformed if you believe that.
ABout 30% of all US households have at least 1 HDTV... that's it... 30%. Most households have 3 TV sets. HDTV is hardly mainstreamed and its hardly what will drive gaming.
The "graphics rule gaming" is such a crock. THere are tons of beautiful games out there that are absolute crap.
THe self declared "hard core" gamer can keep jizzing their jeans over HD graphics, but the fact is, that alone means jack. So what... I don't need to see every pore on Hillary Duff's pace to know she can't act... so why do you think that now I can make out the crows feet around the eyes of your avatar in some FPS that the game is any better than the plethora of crap thats come before?
Graphics drive gaming myth has been put to bed, if graphics were what it took the PS3 would be unstoppable.. The Wii would hardly be selling 2x the number of 360 units a month if graphics are what its about... its not.
Nintendo has this generation locked up, its not even a contest at this point. The only question is how many more units than the other 2 combined will it sell at the end of the day.
PS3 and 360 are left fighting for the same market, while the wii has cast a very large net and will easily outsell them both, it won't even be close when all is said and done... and yes the "hard core" guys treat the Wii like a moped or fat chick.. they'll never admit to playing with one in front of their friends, but will secretly be playing them.
MP3 is so far and away better than ANY FPS on another system that its laughable to claim that another systems games will compete... there is no way you can go from point and click and 3d interaction and then take an 8 or 10 button plus 2 analog sticks again... it is just a joke. Playing the same damn game that came out in 1994, just with higher res gore, is not an advancement.
Nintendo has truly changed gaming, and they are being rewarded hansomely for it.
When the XBOX division of microsoft actually turns a profit, and digs itself out of 21 BILLION in losses, give ma call.. until them claiming MS gaming is the bees knees is laughable.

360 rules? Check your facts. Sell through into the Channel is not the same as sold to the end customer.
If you go by units sold into the channel (Ie have been put on retail shelves, the PS3 has moved something like 8 or 10 million units worldwide.)
The 360 is being outsold 2X+ per month and its monthly sales figures continue to fall, and thats by NPD... of course I'm sure you find some reason that they are lying to.
405k to 170k in July.. 360 numbers have been falling every month, and will continue to do so. Its a ~25 Million unit system at the end of the day... more net losses for MS and a 3rd place finish this gen.

"48% of households on HDTV? haha"
Read again.
48% of NEW TV sales are HDTV.
By Christmas, over 50% of new TV sales will be HDTV.
Christmas 2008 will have over 70% of new TV sales beng HDTV, as prices keep falling.
he more HDTV's we have, the more blie-ray and HDTV players sales we will have. The PS3 is the best value blue-ray player on the market. While the PS3 is expensive as a video game player, its not expansive as a blue-ray player. At an estmated $300 by Christmas 2008, the PS3 is going to sell in millions, as a blue-ray player alone, before even the game console sales.
Remember, over 175 DVD playesrs have ben sold in the US alone.
The Wii can't do HDTV. Games on the Wii are lookng dated aleady. It's going to left on the scrap heap of history with the HDTV revolution

reviewer : "The "graphics rule gaming" is such a crock. "
No one said that. You just said it.
AI, physics and gameplay need poweful processors and graphics though, something that the Wii simply doesn't have.
What I did say though is the 360 has tons of AAA super gamrs like Gears, Oblivion and Bioshock, which the Wii is simply incapable of running. The Wii simply doesn't pack the graphics power to do much of anything. Its about as powerful as the otoginal XBOX.
"THere are tons of beautiful games out there that are absolute crap. "
Like what?
Bioshock is beautiful, and still simply blows away anything the Wii will ever have.
On the other hand, the Wii is ful of crap games like Red Steel, and crap mini-games like Mario Party 8 and Brunswick Pro Bowling which ares till seling for a hopiing $49, plus DS games like Big Brain Acadamy.

reviewer11 : "Graphics drive gaming myth has been put to bed, "
Dream on.
"if graphics were what it took the PS3 would be unstoppable.."
Untill July, the PS3 was selling for $600. The wii is selling for $250. It's not rocket science that the $250 Wii will outsell $600 PS3.
Duh!
100% of all PS2's were sold at less than $300, and the PS2 now has an installed base of 120 million PS2 fanboys that are simply waiting for the PS3 to hit $300 and below, before hey start buying PS3's.
Don't be fooled by the PS3's slow start.
If the PS3 is selling for $250 today, it will vastly outsell the Wii. Back in 2003, the PS2 was seling to the tune of over 500,000 units every sngle month in America(NPD). The Wii hasn't even come close to that, an its a new console, an is selling for even less than the PS2 was selling for at at the time.

reviwer11 : "Nintendo has this generation locked up, its not even a contest at this point."
Hahahahahahaha!
That reminds me of Bush's "mission accomplished" stunt on that aircraft carrier about the Iraq War.
The next-gen war is just starting, and the cheapest console, that sells for less than half the price f the PS3 is outselling the PS3. That's it.
The real war starts when the PS3 is selling for $300 and below(like the PS2 was). It will blow the Wiii out of the water.
" The only question is how many more units than the other 2 combined will it sell at the end of the day."
Yeah?
In America, even the PS2 has outsold the Wii since the Wii was luanched.
"PS3 and 360 are left fighting for the same market,"
The Wii is not even selling as many per month in Amerca as the PS2 did back in 2003 and 2004.
"while the wii has cast a very large net and will easily outsell them both, it won't even be close when all is said and done... "
Dream on. Last month, the PS2 and PS3 together sold as many console combined as the Wii. That's stil playstations sold. As the price of the PS3 falls, the the ratio of PS2/PS3 buyers will shift to the PS3.
"and yes the "hard core" guys treat the Wii like a moped or fat chick.. they'll never admit to playing with one in front of their friends, but will secretly be playing them. "
Hahahahahahaha.
Thse "hard core" you are talking about bought to the tune of 102 million PS2's alone. That's he highest selling console in history.
Why should I even think of the Wii and it's funny mini-games when I have the best game in the last 5 years(Bioshock) on my 360?
"MP3 is so far and away better than ANY FPS on another system that its laughable to claim that another systems games will compete..."
Hahahahahahahaha!
Metriod is simply BOWN AWAY by Bioshock. Metriod not even on the same planet. While Metriod is a last-gen Gamecube game, Bioshock sends the genre into a a whole new level, with the best rewviews and ratings of any game in the last 5 years.
"Nintendo has truly changed gaming, and they are being rewarded hansomely for it."
Nintendo simply copied icrosoft's old Sidewinder freescale mition detecting controller for 2002. They haven't chanhed anything.
Microsoft can simply re-introduce their motion detector controller again if they think it nexessary.
"When the XBOX division of microsoft actually turns a profit, and digs itself out of 21 BILLION in losses, give ma call.. until them claiming MS gaming is the bees knees is laughable."
$21 billion losses on the XBOX huh?
Got any proper link for that piece of nonsense?
FACT: Microsoft mad more profits so far this year, than Nintendo and Sony combined.
In fact, in teh first quarter of this tear alone, microsoft made over 5 times mreprofits than Nintendo made in the entire year. For tehfiscal year that just ended in June, microsoft made NET profits of a nassive $14.4 BILLION. Nintendo doesn't even make that kind of money in 5 years.
Posted by: Smithy | August 31, 2007 12:27 PM
rewiewer11 : "Check your facts. Sell through into the Channel is not the same as sold to the end customer"
I am talking about sell through.
Practically all the old 360 Pros in the channell are sold out. If you go to Amazon, the only 360 Pro's being sold today are the HDMI 360 Pro's that were made in July. As at June ending the 360 had already sold 11.6 to the channel. Those have been cleared out, and the 360 Pro's being sold today were made after June ending in July.
"The 360 is being outsold 2X+ per month and its monthly sales figures continue to fall, and thats by NPD... of course I'm sure you find some reason that they are lying to."
The 360 sold more in June and July than in April and May. and that was before the price cut in August. From September to the end of the year, a fearsome array of AAA games inlcuding Bioshock, Mass Effect and Halo 3 will propel the 360 past the Wii
" Its a ~25 Million unit system at the end of the day... more net losses for MS and a 3rd place finish this gen. "
The 360 has oustold the PS3 every single months since launch, and oustold the wii in November and December.
Even after the PS3 price cut in July, the 360 still outsold the PS3. In August, the 360 will simply increase the gap with the PS3.
With its staggering array of AAA games this Christmas the 360 rules.
September's lhuge Halo3 launch sees the start of the 360's massive counter attack.

"Its GAME OVER for traditional consoles like PS3 and XBOX360."
Is that why a "traditional console" like PS2 has sold to the tune of 120 milion and still continues to sell over 200,000 per month in America even 7 years after launch?
When the motion senstive controlers from in2games for the PS2 hit ths stores this Christmas, coupled with a PS2 price cut to $100, the PS2 alone will blow the Wii out of the water, just like it did last Christmas, when the PS2 sold to the tune o 1.4 million units in December alone to the wii's 580,000.
How many has the wii sold?
Posted by: Smithy | August 31, 2007 1:47 PM
Cmon, dont be fools, let's be realistic, Wii in almost a year in the market and is continuing growing, its aiming a different market and is working, Xbox360 and PS3 fans just deal with it, be happy with good titles, with good ratings, for your consoles, and accept that you can win it all, with the Wii Fit wii will be unstopable, even if it got a 1.0 rating, i was a PS FANBOY and now i got a wii, and im not ashame of have it, i kno it flaws and you know what, I DONT CARE, i know what i bought and im happy boxing my wife some times (LEGALLY), well i got beating some times too, of course im buying an PS3 or 360 for the full HD entertaiment living room, but is not my priority...

Ho, and the FUN fact is.......... PS3 and Xbox are cutting their prices, and the wii not a chance, and that maybe beacause of......????, you know you can aswer that by yourself
Posted by: Jorge | August 31, 2007 3:21 PM
"PS3 and Xbox are cutting their prices, and the wii not a chance, and that maybe beacause of......????, "
Because the Wii is selling for a low-cost, mass-market price of $250, while the PS3 was selling for over twice the price of the Wii at $600.
A $250 will always outsell a $600 console, all things being equal. That's not rocket science. It's got nothing to do with the Wii having "mass appeal".
If the PS3 is selling for $250 today, it easily outsells the Wii.
As for the 360, its been on the market for over 22 months before cutting prices, that's the longest time any console has been on the market before cutting prices.
Every console before has cut prices before 22 months. Nothing new about that.
Posted by: Smithy | August 31, 2007 4:59 PM
Just want to address the idea that if the PS3 was selling for $250 it would be outselling the Wii. That might be correct, however, at the same time it would be driving Sony broke. They are already losing money on their already expensive system, but to take an additional $250 loss would hurt more than it could possibly help them, even with a massive install base at that price.
Posted by: fool | August 31, 2007 11:19 PM
"That might be correct, however, at the same time it would be driving Sony broke. They are already losing money on their already expensive system, but to take an additional $250 loss would hurt more than it could possibly help them, even with a massive install base at that price."
Well, Sony's first quarter profits rose massive 300 percent from brisk sales of its digital cameras and the phenomenal box-office success of the films "Spiderman-3" and "Casino Royale", DESPITE losses from the PS3.
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/87089.html
So Sony is not exactly "going broke" here. They are raking in the money, thank you.
The trouble with Nintendo is, they are a one trick pony, they rely 100% on their games business. Microsoft and Sony made vast amounts of money outside their games businesse.
Posted by: Smithy | September 1, 2007 11:15 PM
Ah the endless struggle between the consoles. I personally believe that Nintendo will do just fine regardless of what the figures may say. For Nintendo, which is a exclusively a gaming company which has been in business longer than Sony and MS combined they have always been in the gambit of trying something new with all their systems. Some flop (like the gamecube) while others (like the DS) end up being the most popular system. MS finally made a profit from their XBOX360 and that was the check point for them to lower their price. the original XBOX (just that division) was always borderlining with profits (they lost more than than they made until just before the 360 was announced), but because they are MS, they have more than enough money to throw at their attempt to keep gamers relying on Windows based programming. Sony has indicated that the PS3 is the last hardware they are going to make, and people are reluctant to buy a system that has poor backwards support. And each revision is having less and less support.
Overall, if MS can keep spending the $ to acquire/keep game companies to be exclusive then they will hold their portion of the market share. Nintendo has decided not to partake in the larger processor/gfx war that has got most people in a rage. They have decided to make games that appeal to casual gamers (non video gamers) and the approach is working as the basic statistics are that there are more people who bought a Wii that never owned any other system, as for the other gamers who have a PS2 have generally gone with the other 2. As for AI/physics, Wii can do better AI (doesn't take as much processing power as you may think), but since physics currently is still being handled by the GFX (but that will soon change with the dual core GFX cards), they will be a bit behind. But Nintendo is notorious with their new business model that they will release a Wii revised model probably at end of 2008 or 2009. Expect the same price, but with HDTV, and a better graphics card.
Time will tell who will actually "win" as HALO 3, Smash Brothers Brawl, Metal Gear Solid 4 and who knows what other exclusive games will come out. Nintendo wins for having the cheaper SDK and half or less the production costs of the other 2.

Who ever said the PS3 controls are the same controls as PS1 controls has never played PS1 then, seeing as the PS1 didn't have analog when they first came out, and PS2 had a pressure sensitive controller analog, the PS3 controls have motion sensors the same as your high and might wiimote...
