Silicon Knight's Denis Dyack on a one-console future
Speaking at the GC Developers Conference, Silicon Knights Denis Dyack claimed that we’re getting closer to having just one standardized gaming platform. He stated that the games industry is “starting to reach a perceptual threshold where the average consumer can't tell the difference between the next-generation consoles.” He also thought it was a trend that would continue, stating that the average consumer could hardly tell the difference between current PS3 and Xbox 360 releases.
He also said that higher development costs made it more difficult for developers to get a return on their investments, adding that "a couple of years ago in November there were 250 games released. There's not enough consumers to play all those games." He concluded by saying that “Next generation, you could see people agreeing on one platform. I think this model, if it occurs, will change everything."
But what will all the fanboys do?
It’s true that this generation has seen higher development costs driving loads of multiplatform releases. To be honest, the PS3 and Xbox 360 provide a fairly similar gaming experience in some ways, with the exception of a few flagship titles. Although we've got Halo 3 and Mass Effect on the way, big upcoming titles like Stranglehold, Assassin's Creed, GTA IV and Call of Duty IV -to name but a few- are all multiplatform. Later on, as the user base for both consoles grows, there's a good chance we'll start to see more divergence between them. But given the competition between Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, I can’t see an agreement on a unified standard happening anytime soon.
