Burnout Paradise to offer downloadable 'neighbourhoods'
You thought downloadable content was all about gamerpics and horse armour did you? Well think again. Criterion is taking a page out of Rockstar’s book and is promising some fairly ambitious downloadable content for the newest iteration of the Burnout series. Burnout: Paradise has been hyped as the Burnout Criterion always wanted to develop. So Burnout, Burnout 2, Takedown, Dominator and Revenge were just cobbled together at the orders of the publisher? It sure takes a long time to get your own way as a developer these days.
Although exact details have not been announced yet, Gameplayer has revealed that Burnout Paradise will be expanding with entire downloadable ‘neighbourhoods’. Unlike its predecessors, Paradise will take place in an entire open world rather than on individual tracks and players will be able to plan their own routes through Paradise City as they see fit. The planned DLC is therefore an expansion in a very literal sense, slotting on new sections on to the existing game world.
It will be interesting to see how this idea works. Presumably the transition between the original and new areas will be very smooth, but how will buying an extra of city affect your gameplay in the new online match modes? Will the players who have more content downloaded have more options open to them in an online race? While new downloadable areas have been tried in games like Oblivion already and are planned for GTA IV, the presence of multiplayer could make this a tricky issue – especially as more and more content becomes available resulting in players with increasingly variable versions of the game.
